Emergency Preparedness And Disaster Management In Health Institutions

Rationale
“There is need to promote health emergency preparedness among general public and to strengthen the health sectors capability to respond to emergencies, disasters or calamities.”

Threats and risks are becoming increasingly complex due to the diversity of natural hazards affecting our country and the growth of transnational threats arising from consequences of terrorism, globalized disease outbreak, climate change, critical infrastructure interdependencies and cyber attacks. Emergencies can quickly escalate in scope and severity, cross jurisdictional lines, take on international dimensions and result in significant human and economic losses.

"Emergency Preparedness is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding both natural and manmade disasters.". It involves mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters.

A key function of the Government is to protect the safety and security of people. Government institutions are increasing their focus on Disaster management activities, given the evolving risk environment in their areas of responsibility. World Health Organization defines Pharmacovigilance as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other medicinerelated problem.
Once drugs are into the market, a medicine leaves the secure and protected scientific environment of clinical trials and is legally set free for consumption by the general population. At this point, most medicines will only have been tested for short-term safety and efficacy on a limited number of carefully selected individuals.
