MDP on Patient Medication Safety and Communication Skills for Hospital Pharmacists

Unsafe use of medication is a major issue in health care in both developed and developing countries, causing millions of patient injuries and costing billions of dollars to health-care systems. 

WHO reports that 10% of patients worldwide are affected due to errors in medical care. This also estimates that in developed nation between 7.5% and 10.4% of patients in acute care settings and 13% in ambulatory settings experience adverse drug events. The financial burden of these errors is as high as US$ 4 billion a year, not counting lost wages, productivity or additional health-care costs. Hence this similar level of harm from unsafe medication is prevailed in both developed and developing nations which confirm that patient medication safety and quality management is a global priority. 

The adverse drug events and medication errors cause significant health and economic repercussions both in developed and developing countries. Therefore a global concerted effort is needed to address patient medication safety and it needs by involving all healthcare stakeholders, including patients. 

Communication has become the buzzword for healthcare professionals, in part due to the overwhelming reports of medication misuse. According to a healthcare research report majority of population are failing to comply some way with their medication regimens. Better communication skills in pharmacy practice enhance the pharmacist's ability to develop professional relationships with their patients, co-workers and other healthcare providers to optimize health care. 

The IIHMR University, Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur has been contributing towards this very topical issue of international importance through its flagship yearly WHO sponsored International Courses in Promoting Rational Drug Use in Communities (PRDUC) for last 11 years. To addresses the issues related to Patient medication safety and medicines management, a Management Development Program on "Patient Medication safety and Communication Skills for Hospital Pharmacist" is being organized at IIHMR from January 11- 15, 2016.

Objectives:

The specific objectives of the program are:

• To enable participants understand the concepts and need of medication safety culture in organization. 

•  To Develop error-reduction strategies around the use of high-alert medications 

• To discuss effective communication techniques and human error that may impact on patient medication safety. 

•  To discuss how to promote two-way communication with patients and health care professionals. 

•  To enable participants to identify common barriers to verbal communication and describe ways to overcome each barrier. 

Key Resource Person:

The program will be offered by a team of faculty members with health systems expertise. All key resource persons have high quality academic track record, teaching, research and extensive program implementation experience in health systems. MDP on Pharmacovigilance and Drug Monitoring

Innovations and increase in the number of drugs into the market resulted in rise of adverse drug events and drug related toxicities. With the utmost importance on patient safety and regulatory compliance, pharmaceutical firms must effectively monitor and detect adverse event reports and comply with all regulatory standards. Increased public scrutiny has been driving the focus on drug safety surveillance.

IIHMR University is going to organize a worshop on "Scholar Writing"

The workshop aims to sensitize the participants on Writing and publishing scientific papers, ‘Issues related to Plagiarism’ and how the power of reference manager can be used in their research activities. The focus of the workshop is to provide hands-on training on Reference Management tools like Mendeley – or other a free reference manager” to the participants.

Plagiarismis considered as a form of misconduct in scholarly communications. You, as a researcher, must have heard about it; or you might know what it is. However, there exists ambiguity about it in academic community. When does plagiarism occur? Is there any established percentage to determine when plagiarism has taken place? Is there a rule of thumb to determine plagiarism? Are there different types of it? What may be the consequences if plagiarism is detected? How to avoid it? This workshop aims to address these types of questions. Use of reference manager can be a powerful addition to your research activities. Mendeley is a free Reference Manager and Academic Social Network that can assist you in managing references, research papers (PDFs), annotating your PDFs, taking searchable notes, citing while you are writing, automatically creating bibliographies, syncing your account between multiple computers, collaborating, and discovering new research in fields of interest.
