The STRIPE consortium is comprised of Johns Hopkins University, and seven research/academic institutions around the world selected to represent different epidemiologic profiles of the poliovirus (i.e., endemic). These institutions are based in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the DRC, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. Each consortium partner is led by a team of investigators supported by in-country faculty, staff, students, and advisors.

#Dr. S.D. Gupta, Trustee Secretary, Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR), India, and Chairman and Distinguished Professor, IIHMR University, is the STRIPE Principal Investigator for India.  Dr. Gupta leads the project and oversees the collaborative relationships.

#Dr. Piyusha Majumdar, Assistant Professor, IIHMR University, is the STRIPE Co-Principal Investigator for India. As Co-PI, she leads the STRIPE project's qualitative research and works collaboratively with other country partners to contribute towards knowledge synthesis.

#STRIPE is a research collaboration across eight global institutions. We aim to map, synthesize, and disseminate lessons learned from the global polio eradication initiative to help advance population health in remaining polio-endemic and at-risk countries and facilitate the effective implementation of future health programs and health systems strengthening activities globally.

3 December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

3 December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). On this Day, WHO joined partners to celebrate "a day for all." This theme reflects a growing understanding that disability is part of the human condition. Disability Day aims to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability and make people more aware of the rights, dignity, and welfare of disabled people.

Facts about disability
-At least 10% of the world's population, or 650 million people, live with a disability.

-20% of the world's poor are disabled.

-The percentage of children with disabilities not attending school is extremely variable and is between 65 - 85% in some African countries.

-Mortality for children with disabilities may be as high as 80% in countries where under-five mortality as a whole has decreased to below 20%.

-In many low-income and middle -income countries, only 5-15% of disabled people who require assistive devices and technology have access to them.

World Aids Day

World Aids day was first observed in 1988; HIV remains a significant global public health issue. Moreover, like many other major health issues, it faces additional challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 observance theme is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience and Impact.”

HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care services are all being disrupted, particularly in fragile health systems. The breakdown in essential HIV services due to COVID-19 is threatening lives. Any slowing down in providing these services will leave many vulnerable populations at greater risk of HIV infection and AIDS-related deaths. Nevertheless, all over the world, health workers and community representatives are doing their utmost to keep services going, adopting innovative ways to overcome disruptions in services caused by COVID-19.

Some markers:

38,000,000 estimated number of people living with HIV in 2019
1,700,000 people were newly infected with HIV in 2019
690,000 people died of HIV-related causes in 2019
68 % of adults living with HIV received lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 2019

A public health approach is directed to address the health needs of a population or the people's collective health status. Much more progress in containing the diseases is possible by further applying public health principles through closer integration of health care and public health action. The S. D. Gupta School of Public Health, under IIHMR University, will focus on preparing future leaders and build public health capacity and skills with emphasis on public health practice to meet the challenges of the 21st Century and bridge gaps in public health education and practices.
